Hi,
I know that Gusta Goldschmidt had lessons from him . She found him to
be a very musical man but the story goes she was abhorred to find a
portrait of Hitler hanging on the wall of his study. And the two
didn't get along though possibly not because of the portrait.
N.B. Of course the fact that someone has a portrait of Hitler does not
neccesarily mean that he or she has sympathy for the subject of it. I
don't want to mar the excellent reputation the man has in music. He
was truly a very important man in the lute revival.
Cheers,

If you count the courses on his lute you will find that there are

The models were invariably two-headed lutes with ten courses.
Sometimes referred to as Erzlaute.
He never played d-minor tuning. As he was also a great improvisor
possibly he was afraid different tunings might upset his sound-stop
association (I don't know how to translate the German "Klang-Griff
Assoziation" or Dutch "klank-greep associatie" properly, sorry) One
of
my teachers took lessons from him in the early sixties. He told me
so.

Thera are some recordings on which Gerwig is listed as using an

and there are photos of him with what looks like a 12 or 13course
lute.

Gerwig used a 10 course lute in ren tuning for everything he did.
It was made by a luthier called Hans Jordan from Markneukirchen
Germany.
Bob Spencer and Michael Schaeffer also used lutes by him in their
early days. Daniel Benko also plays a modified lute by this maker.
They were rather heavy instruments but well made. In fact in the
fifties and early sixties they were the best lutes money could buy.

Hi-Can anyone comment on the type of lutes Gerwig used? I seem to
remember hearing that he used some kind of 10 course in ren
tuning even for the baroque music.

Did he make an effort to find the original tapes? That would of
course be the ideal.
I think a very worthwhile project. He was a wonderful player,
and it's worth noting
that these recordings were made with gut strings at least for the
on board strings.

Subject: [LUTE] Download Gerwig Recordings
Hello All,
A colleague at work (BBC Radio 3) is writing a doctoral thesis on
historical historical recordings, as it were - old recordings of
early music. He has an excellent collection of records, which
he is in the process of digitizing.
He's made some excellent transfers of a number of recordings
which may be of interest to us lutenists. They are out of
copyright (at least, they are here in the UK - I think the
situation is different in the USA, so do be careful that you are
not breaking any local laws if you choose to download them).
The files are FLAC lossless audio - not compressed in the way
that mp3s are, but a completely faithful reproduction of the
sound from the vinyl. There are lots of shareware players out
there that can cope with FLAC files - Audacity, Winamp and VLC
being three...
Walter Gerwig was, in my opinion, a very fine player - despite
the dated technique he gets a nice sound from his instrument.
Very musical, if favouring speeds which to me seem a little on
the slow side, here he is well-recorded and my friend Nick has
cleaned up and de-clicked the transfers with a light touch.
So here we have Archiv EPA 37078, with a couple of relative
rarities:
Reusner Suite:
http://www.mediafire.com/?cq4qykxebtm
Hinterleitner Partita.rar:
http://www.mediafire.com/?y3ywnrjwn3d
If these prove to be of interest, I can also upload:
Archiv 13027a - Works by Mouton
Archiv AP 13022 - Bach suite BWV 995
Archiv AP 13031 - Works by Neusidler and Garsi da Parma
I hope that these are of interest - Nick has put quite a bit of
work into these transfers and I'm sure that he would value any
feedback or comments - I'll pass on any that I receive.
Also, if anyone can think of more old recordings of lute music,
Nick would be interested to hear about them, as they might fill
gaps in his catalogue.
Best wishes,
Peter
