Hi Arto,
So, you say they are different "animals", interesting... but soundwise, how would you describe both? More or less ressonant, brighter or darker tone, more powerful? Why Piccinini would prefer an archlute and Michelangelo Galilei would write for a ten course? From your statement there is something extra, besides the number of strings... Dear Bruno, they are different instruments - different "animals" as some would say. Often for ex. the archlute has single basses while a 10-courser always has double basses with octaves... Etc. Two separate instruments. And yes, we would definitely "recognize on a blind test one an the other". All the best, Arto To get on or off this list see list information at [1]http://www.cs.dartmouth.edu/~wbc/lute-admin/index.html -- References 1. http://www.cs.dartmouth.edu/~wbc/lute-admin/index.html
