vel: EMS lute, good or bad? again

Hi Seth,

after a I bought an disappointing 10course lute from a German lute maker near Nürnberg (Bubenreuth) now a few weeks ago I got the _new_ model from the early music shop. Its built from rose wood (Palisander), a 2-3 mm thin spruce soundboard and 23 ribs, probably made from a kind of maple, has a string length of 59,5 cm and a weight of 900 gramms. it comes together with the simple, but solid well known red case. i think its origin is Pakistan. if you have a look at the price (644 €), you would not take a risk to choose this model for your first lute. i play lute just for fun since 15 years (after 30 years guitar) and I´m very satisfied with this new lute model. the workmanship is excellent, the lute has good resonance and sounds "well".

if you would like to catch a glimpse of it, look here. i´m sorry, my small page is yet under constuction, life is short.

all the best for you

Rainer

Subject: [LUTE] Lute shopping advice?

Hello!

I am brand new to this list but have already been very entertained by the
conversation.

Recently someone asked for some advice on purchasing a lute and I was a bit surprised by the lack of responses. I am assuming a public forum is not a
comfortable place to discuss the pros and cons of various luthiers.

So, to take a step back and to reframe this from a larger view: how would
one go about selecting a luther from which to commission a lute?

All non-maker specific advice would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Seth
