Ah, Marius, one big difference between lutes and guitars is that there are a vast many perfectly acceptable decent classical guitars available on a mass-produced scale. One can get into classical guitar on an instrument of fair quality without having to delve into the realm of the best handmade instruments. The very best hand-made classical guitars do take into the tens of thousands US/EU$. Still, there are playable guitars to be had starting at a couple-few hundred. Yes, it is, All lutenist I've meet are former rock or classical guitarist coverted to lute. Once you play lute for the first time is no way back.. is like Windows and Macintosh :) ... but the comparison si far away to be exact... Please find another parallel! :) A good classical guitar also is close to a good lute in terms of pricing. The best classical guitars are hand made. WE have in Romania a pretty well known luthier, his name is Constantin Dumitriu, His guitars are between 3500 - 5000 euros. Here is an example. I have decided to take the advice of one of you and wait till I find a teacher and am sure of what type of music I want to play before I buy a lute. Since i am on a tight budget (retired) I have to ensure I know what I am doing before shelling out thousands of dollars, potentially (I do need to eat and drink a glass of wine occasionally). I totally agree that any handmade lute is worth the money and the artists who make them deserve the money. Naively I thought there were factory made lutes (like guitars) that one could buy to start out with. Now I know better, and will be patient, and decide and buy when I am sure of where I am going musically...... but I secretly wonder...maybe classical guitar is a better and cheaper way to go...? tell me oh lute savants... is the lute that much better and sexier??? thanks so much Nebraska Joe To get on or off this list see list information at [9]http://www.cs.dartmouth.edu/~wbc/lute-admin/index.html -- References 1. http://mariuscruceru.ro/2009/05/04/regun-sm-20/ 2. http://www.fishman.com/products/details.asp?id=38 3. mailto:[email protected] 4. mailto:[email protected] 5. mailto:[email protected] 6. mailto:[email protected] 7. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LNI2_Xfp2qU 8. mailto:[email protected] 9. http://www.cs.dartmouth.edu/~wbc/lute-admin/index.html
