   The lower voice parts probably lie very well on the lute because Van
   Wilder was a lutenist.  Of course there is no evidence that this
   chanson was conceived on the lute but it works.  It's a pity there is
   no real surviving example of his writing for the lute: I'm convinced
   the 'Dump philli' from the Marsh ms. has absolutely nothing to do with
   Van Wilder and the attribution to him is the 'wildest' of speculations.
   The chanson was printed in four parts with the typical one flat, and my
   intabulation really omits nothing.  The lute is pitched in modern 'E'
   with a string length of 72 cm, which allows Donna to use the best part
   of her range.
