Andrew,

My first lute was an EMS 8c and it was very disappointing. I used to spend a
long time trying to tune it because of its awful pegbox mechanism, strings
broke very easily or were damaged due to a harsh nut and the soundboard was
too thick for a good sound. This is very discouraging for a beginner and
many times I rather preferred to stop playing and put it aside.

I think it's better to pay a bit more and get a good student lute from a
lute maker. When you're starting to learn an instrument, the instrument
shouldn't be an obstacle for your wish to learn, but an incentive.

Best,

Nicolás
