This product has been mentioned here before. Bag Balm is probably similar to
Udderly Smooth (mentioned by Guy), and other products that were originally
intended for cows, but also found to be efficacious for humans (including lutenists).

And you can be assured it's authentic, coming, as it does, from Vermont.<g>

I like Udderly Smooth, which doesn't leave a residue. It's popular among
knitters, which is how I found out about it (my wife is a dedicated

Lubriderm moisturizes well.  But it leaves my fingers
catchy, even to the point of squeaking slightly on
