As a newcomer to the lute, I have a question about nut installation for any luthiers on the list who might care to respond.

The string height and spacing at the nut on my 8-course lute needed adjustment. As an experienced guitar repairman, I was surprised to find that the nut was not glued into place--especially given the large amount of friction and sideways tension exerted by the outside strings on a lute.

The adjustment went well, but I'm now wondering if there are any reasons why a dab of glue should not be applied to hold the nut in place more securely. Or is it normal practice for a Renaissance lute nut to be held in place only by the string tension?

Many thanks, and regards to all,
