Usually a tiny drop of glue is used. You may have had one that just came loose.
Do not use glue containing rubbery material, or use shims of paper or
cardboard.
If a shim is necessary, use paper with rag content, and the tiniest
drop of crazy glue.
The glue will wick through the paper and alter its dampening
properties so that it may be used as a shim.
There are different philosophies as to the grooves in the nut. You
may have through grooves or resting grooves.
In a through groove, the groove is carved all the way through.
For resting, the groove approaches the edge but does not cut into it,
so the string rests on a rounded surface, like a fret.
I prefer the latter, but it is hard to get it right.
