This book is nice, but you will need information about the history of history
to fully understand it:

Peter Burke. The Italian Renaissance. Culture and Society in Italy. 1999

The idea of a "Renaissance" (rebirth) was "invented" in the 19th century,
exactly the epoch were history, as we now understand it, was invented as well.
People living in those centuries (trecento, cuatrocento, cinquecento...) were
not aware that they were in the Renaissance :-)

Our relationship with the past has changed a lot in comparison with the way
other epochs related to it.
