Thank you for the additional citations Markus; I was sure that it was for "one of those instruments with fourths and fifths," although it doesn't appear to be plectral, and knew that Tyler thought it for mandore, despite the boldly stamped title by the modern binder.

I have some more detailed notes from the source itself that I hope to put online and, as I've told Arthur, more US-R sources should be available digitally soon--I've rushed some things to the top of the list since my visit. Of course, that's "rush" in library time! Maybe early next year . . .

I think the database entry of accordsnouveaux.ch (François-Pierre Goy &
Andreas Schlegel) also says, it is for mandore.

Praetorius gives this scordatura for the "Mandürichen" (also from
accordsnouveaux.ch). Quote in German:

"Von Praetorius stammen die frühesten erhaltenen Angaben zur Tonlage der
Mandore.
g'' c'' g' c' = hfh
c'' g' c' g = fhfh
c'' f' c' f c = hfhf."

in English: From Praetorius we have the first mentioning regarding the
pitch of a mandore. In the second part of Syntagma musicum: De
Organographia, Wolfenbüttel, Elias Holwein, 1619 he gives in the Tabella
Universalis Aller blasenen und besaitteten Instrumenten (of all blown
and stringed instruments) on p.28 three tunings for the Mandürichen
(mandore):
g'' c'' g' c' = hfh
c'' g' c' g = fhfh
c'' f' c' f c = hfhf."

The last scordature fits perfectly for this manuscript.

Dear Markus,

James Tyler and other scholars regard this tablature as for mandore, not
guitar, based on the tuning and style of music. I looked at this
manuscript at the Sibley just last week. Here is the entry on my web
page:

US-R Ms. Vault M125 .FLXVII [1670]
(Germany) [RISM B/VII p. 301 (with many inaccuracies, see: TYLER p. 142)]
5-string mandore in French tablature
11-course lute in French tablature

It would be a difficult argument to follow Boetticher and the 1930s
auctioneer and say that this is guitar music . . .

This scordatura seems to be quite interesting.
Probably it might be - I tried it out, (and now found it also mentioned
in the Database of the Accords Noveaux site): hfhf
In french notation (course-fret):
1a = 2h
2a = 3f
3a = 4h
4a = 5f

Thanks so much Arthur! Any idea why the item description refers to
the tab as "the so called New French" notation?

And the opening guitar pieces are in scordatura. Don't know which one.
