Just to add to what Sean said, the hardest thing about 7 course in a 
performance situation, is remembering to retune. In a concert, after playing a 
group of 7=F say, the thing to do is tune down immediately to D and then play 
something on 6 courses to give the strings a minute to adjust to the pitch, 
then fine tune again. 
I think 7 course lute is only 7/8 as difficult as 8 course lute.
