Musical instruments can be played during Lent depending on the denomination. The Allegri Miserere is meant to be a cappella, and that would be a reason to not include instruments. However, I was in a choir whose sopranos were having a lot of difficulty with the high notes, so our director imbedded an oboe player in the soprano section to give support and confidence.
