Musical instruments can be played during Lent depending on the
denomination. The Allegri Miserere is meant to be a cappella, and that
would be a reason to not include instruments. However, I was in a choir
whose sopranos were having a lot of difficulty with the high notes, so
our director imbedded an oboe player in the soprano section to give
   support and confidence.

That wouldn't be very appropriate as musical instruments including the organ
are not supposed to be used during Lent.
