Perhaps they should have left the high notes out. they are not in the original version anyway.....!

  Musical instruments can be played during Lent depending on the
  denomination. The Allegri Miserere is meant to be a cappella, and that
  would be a reason to not include instruments. However, I was in a choir
  whose sopranos were having a lot of difficulty with the high notes, so
  our director imbedded an oboe player in the soprano section to give
  support and confidence.

  My parish's choir always sings the Gregorio Allegri Miserere, Psalm 51,
  on Ash Wednesday.  I'd love to see the lute could be included in that
  piece.

That wouldn't be very appropriate as musical instruments including the organ
are not supposed to be used during Lent.
