> version is sometimes attributed to Dowland by Google... How much
credence should we give to that?
The piece in the Schele ms appears as : "Del Excellentissimo Musico Jano
Dulando.." [22.6.1614]
I don't have the book by D. Poulton but as I remember she excludes
Dowland's authorship for stilistical reasons.
In the booklet, no, let's call it book, to his recordings of the
complete works of Dowland Paul O'Dette writes that it is"probably the
work of Daniel Bachelar: More than half of the variations appear in
Bachelar's setting in Lord Herbert of Cherbury's Lutebook and the style
of the variations and its use of the instrument is closer to Bachelar
than to Dowland."
But it seems clear that Schele is earlier than Cherbury.
Well, tomorrow we can all have a look at it :-)
And what about the great "La mia Barbara" "by Dowland" in the Schele ms?
Amicalement
