It is probably Spanish in origin although a bit obscure. It is in triple time, related to the Mariona, but faster and the stress falls on alternate groups of 5 and 7 beats. The name possibly is derived from the term "capon" because these walk in a funny way but may also refer to castrati.... who also walk in a funny way. Linda Sayce in the liner notes to a CD she made with Charivari Agreable suggests that Piccinini's version is actually an arrangement of a piece for baroque guitar. Picinini spent some time in Spain. There are versions of it in some Portugese mss. for baroque guitar. Does that help? Monica

In fact I have Kaps. book, my question was about the Capon(n)a itself. Interesting Italian text pointed by Bernd, it connects the Capona to the carnival, a popular tavern ballo: Altri balli erano destinati alle taverne e al popolo tra questi: LA CAPONA , un ballo da taverna (...) 2015-10-24 11:26 GMT-02:00 Paolo Busato <[1][email protected]>: Piccinini's "Intavolatura di Liuto" contains (page 55) a "CHIACCONA-Cappona alla vera Spagnola".
