Matanya's opinions very often differed from my own. I remained a close friend
because I didn't personally care that they did or that his statement of such
was occasionally "colorful." I was fortunate to play a small part in his
publishing efforts (as occasional proofreader), and I found him to be one of
the most generous and dear of my personal friends. I also assisted in a small
way in his hospice care by virtue of my proximal residence. I recently posted
the following to the Facebook-group page of the Columbus Guitar Society:

"Dear Friends,

"Many of you will have known Matanya Ophee: renowned scholar, stalwart
discoverer/publisher of guitar and lute music via Editions Orphee, and general
friend of all things classical guitar. And a dear personal friend of mine. This
message was posted [Tuesday] evening by his wife:

'This is Matanya's wife, Margarita Mazo. I'm writing to inform you that, after
a difficult five-month battle for his life, Matanya passed away on Monday
evening at 6:00 p.m. at the Zusman House Hospice. There will be a Celebration
of his life on Sunday, November 12 at 3:30 p.m. at the Synagogue of The Wexner
Heritage Village, 1151 College Avenue in Bexley, Ohio 43209. All are welcome to
attend. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Zusman House at Wexner
Heritage Village at the address above.'

"Several of us will be performing in memoriam of a great friend, a great man. I
hope some of you reading here can join us."

Sincerely,
Eugene
Artistic Director

Subject: [LUTE] Matanya Orphee

   Hi All,

I have not seen this posted here:

Guitarist, publisher, editor, scholar Matanya Orphee passed away on
   November 6th at 6:00 p.m.
Matanya was an extraordinary man: incredibly productive, controversial,
   combative and generous.
He made some great contributions to the guitar literature not least of
which is advocating and publishing and even commissioning works for
   Russian 7 string guitar.
He also published some lute editions.
I am grateful to him as the publisher of 5 of my works.
I believe Matanya had the rare distinction of being kicked off this
   list.
