Many thanks to all who replied to my query.  The quotes seem to be be 
quite consistent with each other, also with the famous description of 
Francesco "seeking out a fantasia".  It seems the titles "fantasia" and 
"recercar" (in all its variant spellings) are interchangeable, both 
referring to an improvisation.
