sorry, that's ambiguous. 

it's not illegal for a customer to deal with manufacturers directly if
they choose to. it's illegal for a retailer to tell a customer "we don't
do warranties, contact the manufacturer". they sold it to you, they have
a legal obligation to deal with the warranty.

company policy doesn't override the law any more than a personal policy
of "i can take whatever i want without paying for it" does.  

both cases are equally absurd.  unfortunately, lots of people have been 
suckered into believing that the former is both legitimate and enforcable.
