Myself, I got a cheap no-name tablet off eBay (Australian
seller) for about $125 + $15 postage, and it's served me
reasonably well.

One thing you really might consider on getting a new tablet is
one that has an easily replaceable battery. I know they do
exist. I think ifixit.com might have some reviews.

Just a rant, but given that batteries are consumables, with a
useful life of only a couple of years, it's a real shame that
otherwise usable hardware has to get junked just because the
irreplaceable battery has died or dropped down to unusably low
capacity. I'm sharpening up my spudger for when the battery on
my tablet gives up the ghost, but that's not an option for your
average punter. Followups on this rant to luv-talk or maybe
luv-tech.
