Having been alerted to the existence of journalctl I had a look.  Maybe 
because I have syslog still running the messages are only going to the 
old places, but the man for journalctl implied they would be scraped 
anyway, but there was little of what I would want to see held by it.
I _like_ to use vi and grep to find traces of whatever I was trying to 
extract from messages.
