Another hidey-hole for problems is in ~/.cache/sessions
I have the following lines in rc.local:
rm -f /home/<user>/.cache/sessions/xfce4-session-<host>:0
rm -f /home/<user>/.cache/sessions/xfce4-session-<host>:0.bak
Easy enough to check on this with a text login and see if it exists
before doing the graphical login.
