comfortable I am with it. I know it has ts detractors on this list, so let's

No, I have systemd and XFCE writes it when I log out (or is it when it is shut down via the session gui?). I never did nail exactly where and why it was generated, I found it out by trawling the entrails of failed sessions, deleting each newly time stamped item until I found the culprit.
