Hi Russell,
dmesg has quite a lot in it, what is polite to post, because I do not
understand the output.

I searched for a way to uninstall Google Chrome as an update is needed.
I came across this:
alg@xxxxxxx :~$ sudo dpkg -r google-chrome-stable
[sudo] password for alg:
To update it you would normally run:
sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade
Then restart any running browsers.
and I got this:
dpkg: unrecoverable fatal error, aborting:
loading files list file for package 'mutter-common': cannot open
/var/lib/dpkg/info/mutter-common.list (Input/output error)
alg@andrewg:~$
You have a bigger problem. Look at the output of "dmesg" to hopefully get
information on the cause of the error.
You may need to buy new storage hardware, and consider RAID for future use.
