Hi Bob,

One thing you might try to see if T'bird is the culprit, is to use the
portable app version, either installed on a USB stick or into a folder of
your choice. The caveat is that you'd be manually starting it, so that may
obviate the suspicion that it's network delays that are the cause.

Have you tried any other mail client to see if it suffers a similar issue?

I assume that your mail server runs 24/7 and is a separate device to that
which you run T'bird on?

What's the network setup i.e. wired, wireless etc?
