One advantage of Linux is that there are no restrictions on running server
software on a workstation. For archiving old mail I have Dovecot running
locally and just move mail from my regular IMAP account to the localhost one
which is then backed up by the usual home directory backup system.
This is the way of handling large email stores, run it on a mail server
and access via IMAP.
