For large mail stores you don't necessarily want to run it on a real server
(IE a VM or server hosted in a DC) because you typically have limited storage.

I have 5GB of archived email and my main mail server in Germany has 480G of
RAID-1 storage shared with many other people and no good options for
increasing it. While my email would only be 1% of the storage, it's one of
many decisions that saved 1% each and add up to the system continuing to run
with sufficient free space. For my home server I can just add more storage
whenever I feel like it.
