SVM had been part of the miniroot since Solaris 9.

This capability is used to allow for SVM metadevices to be correctly 
handled when the OS is upgraded.

And yes you can create metadevices (as well as metadbs) when you are 
installing a system. Jumpstart keywords have been added to allow 
automation of this task. Please consult the Solaris 10 installation doc 
@ docs.sun.com for the procedures.
