Well, I'm no Linux expert and I'm not familiar with kernel 3.x, but I would go looking that way. My apologies, it is not tun0 but tap0, and it shows up in ifconfig only when you run the program (when it is open), and in some systems you have to be root for this to succeed, unless you change something here and there. My system is a CentOS 5 which has been iteratively upgraded from a RH7.1, so I can't tell you if there is a package needed to have a tuntap interface working. My bet is it should work out-of-the-box, so fire a ddd and follow the clues. Did you run simhost ? Try that one first, simrouter plays with other interface.
