That would probably be one source of your problem :) The upcoming ubuntu 12.04 pretty much works out-of-the-box as lxc host and guest. Enough for me to justify using it on my laptop since its beta days. As for other guests, I wrote what I did on my wiki. Centos5 and 6 should be good example of what customizations needed for sysvinit and upstart-based distros.
