You could install, firstly, use a different user for it, checkout the
live repos in the new user's $HOME and install prefixed in a $HOME
subdirectory. Then you could test the changes in a nested X server, such
as Xnest or Xephyr. This way you will keep your system sane.

Other way is to use virtualization and hack on a virtual machine...

There are plenty of possibilities... :D
