There are some licensing issues about Mozilla insisting on control of their 
Firefox branding.
This is the reason for Iceweasel and some other workarounds.  Try Googling 
"ubuntu firefox branding" to see some of the discussion.

We probably wouldn't be able to do anything about this without eventually 
getting a cease and desist letter.

Are you talking about the menu icon or the taskbar icon?  They come from 
different places.
