There are a couple ways you could fix this. The default theme is "hicolor", so icons are taken from /usr/share/icons/hicolor. After installing lxde-common, you will have /usr/share/icons/nuoveXT2. In ~/.gtkrc-2.0 specify gtk-icon-theme-name="nuoveXT2" and see if you like the nuoveXT2 icons throughout. Or, install just the few needed icons from nuoveXT2 into the /usr/share/icons/hicolor subtree. There is also a small code bug that I fixed in lxpanel affecting a few things that use the so-called "builtin" icons, that I can move over to lxlauncher.
The documentation on themes and how .gtkrc works is not very good, so unfortunately I cannot point you to a crisp tutorial. Good luck to you and thanks again for your work.
