Building it was easy enough minus a small hiccup configuring (needed the 
--enable-man flag). I ran the resulting executable but nothing shows up, 
but I think that's because I'm missing a configuration file. Once I have 
the panel showing up I'm going to use Orca to see where the trouble 
spots are. I've heard that the actual applications menu is accessible, 
just not the panel itself. I'll spend some time reading the source and 
come back here if I have questions.
