This is specific to your distribution. The LXDE components don't require 
it. (Maybe your Debian has CUPS, sane, or gvfs and their packaging of it 
requires avahi.)

(I use LXDE components on NetBSD; they don't depend on avahi. My 
meta-package called "light-desktop" does depend on avahi though.)
