what are you missing? There are good enough workaround for some of the removed 
things and over time I added a few things back. And for Qt 5.4 I have some 
things on my TODO list to add things to QX11Info and/or xcb plugin. You might 
also be interested in my last years Akademy talk which addresses the problem 
[1].

Note that the documentation of Qt 4 always warned against using the platform 
specific parts. Yes it was painful, but we cannot say that we were not warned 
;-)
