Another idea: I do recommend to ask around on high-traffic FOSS mailing
lists, like the KDE ones.
I myself took part on a GSoC program as a student a few years back, and it
was a great experience.
As someone said above, we were really dependent on our mentor, his steering
of our vision and guidance was really needed, and he was (they were) highly
competent both as developers, both as serious contributors to the overall
project, knowing it inside and out.
So it will be a challenging job and needs a dedication, where the mentor
clearly sees what is to be done overall and how that integrates in the
entire project.
Also, the student should ideally have a good acquaintance with the whole
project, having used it and having browsed the code and the APIs, so they
have a starting point to build a vision and a design on.
I think knowing the project beforehand and having worked with the mentor
helped being accepted, since I was already involved with most of what had
to be done.
So I recommend those who are interested to participate as students to get
involved with the project seriously.
