Yes, we plan for supporting that new systray, but nobody seems to have the
time to do it.
I played with the proposed spec for a while last year but had no success.
It's a good idea to stole some code from KDE, but it has quite complicated
dependencies which are hard to remove.

If you're willing to working on that, it will be highly appreciated.
IMHO, a separate plugin might be better.
BTW, the old xembed stuff cannot be dropped completely.
The status notifier spec still requires xembed as a fallback so it's better
to retain xembed stuff and only turn it off when not running in X11.
