Not only do you mention good reasons for "still using lynx" but also, I've had "broadband" (+100K down) since 99, and I find lynx is still indispensible: 1. it's still faster (reduce ALERT timing!) 2. if you work in a shell it's the best maintained user-agent by far IMHO and lets you google fastest for info - better productivity 3. it is a superb download manager 4. with a proper cryptographic filesystem you can secure access to your bookmarks and cookies 5. its server certificate handling with the *nix system is excellent 6. many users prefer a .cfg file for settings 7. it's an excellent way to teach many important *nix fundamentals 8. the increasing pollution of scripted advertising is bypassed (see many major media sites) 9. the absence of javascript support is becoming a plus IMHO 10. the lynx-dev list is one of the most interesting :)
lynx to me is one of the core *nix apps; the presence of an up to date version on a system is important, just like pine or gcc or vi. There is no substitute. Lynx is an original treasure and a real gift to us all. __Stef http://caunter.ca/contact.html On Fri, 31 Dec 2004 [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: > 041230 [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: > > Linkname: Astronomy Picture of the Day Archive > > URL: http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/archivepix.html > > Neat site, BTW! > > indeed ! i don't know how i've missed it till now ! > tho' i'm not sure why anyone would use Lynx to access it today. > i continue to use Lynx to mail news stories to people (with Mutt+Gvim), > browse local files (typically help dox in remote dirs under /usr ) > & access 1 major newspaper which refuses to deal with other browsers > due to some quirk in its handling of cookies & registration. > Lynx lost its big advantage -- speed -- with the spread of broadband. > > anyway, i certainly echo the vote of thanx to TD for working on it. > > -- > ========================,,============================================ > SUPPORT ___________//___, Philip Webb : [EMAIL PROTECTED] > ELECTRIC /] [] [] [] [] []| Centre for Urban & Community Studies > TRANSIT `-O----------O---' University of Toronto > > > _______________________________________________ > Lynx-dev mailing list > [email protected] > http://lists.nongnu.org/mailman/listinfo/lynx-dev > _______________________________________________ Lynx-dev mailing list [email protected] http://lists.nongnu.org/mailman/listinfo/lynx-dev
