when I hit enter on your examples, I got a malformed news url error,
stating no server specified.

Success as in, it asks for a username (which I don’t have).
From earlier experience reading GMane news with lynx, you
don’t need *any* configuration and it will just work with
any site that runs an actual NNTP/Usenet server.
