yes, that is correct; lynx is an NNTP client that can be used to
download and display individual articles, but it is not a stateful
newsreader.

Are you talking about binary newsgroups that split files into
multiple posts?
You’d still need to download them individually, then concatenate.
For threading, I’d have suggested to use any newsreader (such as
pine/alpine/PC-Pine), but binary newsgroups are bound to have
specialised programs that automate all the concatenating and
decoding. I’ve never been interested in them, so I merely heard
of them, and they probably are rather visual-oriented…
If you want to do it “the hard way”, you need a newsreader that
can thread the messages, download all the uuencoded messages into
individual files with names in order (something like 0001, 0002,
etc.), decode them all individually, then concatenate, e.g. with
the Unix cat command. Good luck with that…
As lynx does not thread, I’d not use it for that. It does show
the messages in order, but the posting order may not even be the
message order (if they went through, from the poster’s, in the
wrong order) and threading uses message headers to bring them
into order.
