This seems like a rash statement. Why do you think that interest or
support for these protocols are dwindling? Omen technologies version
of zmodem is still available and being updated. The free version,
lrzsz continues development. Kermit is still very active, with a
recent new release and a lively usenet group.

Kermit works quite well over a telnet connection, and zmodem usually
works also.
