The \E[1~ and \E[4~ versus
\E[H and \E[F (which you see at the command line)
or \EOH and \EOF (which is the application-mode, in the terminfo)
are the two variants (vt220-style and PC-style) escape sequences that XFree86
xterm can send, depending on the resource settings. When I made the #88
patch, I was using the former mostly, but it wasn't the default resource
setting (but that was late 1999 - I corrected it early last year when I
revised things to keep vt220- and PC-style stuff separate).
