This is one of the very first things covered in The "LyX for LaTeX users"
section of the Tutorial. People will just have to read *some* docs;
splash.lyx can't possibly answer all the questions people will have. The
truth is, the average new user uses a program either because a friend tells
them about it---in which case the friend can tell them about the neat
features---or because they saw it in email/web, in which case we just have
to make sure the Features page mentions all the cool things lyx can do.
Maybe we should have a "why should I use lyx" page, which mentions the best
features of LyX. E.g.:
---------
I use Word, and have never heard of LaTeX: why should I use LyX?
- worry less about details like font size, tabs
- tables, footnotes, references are easy to use and powerful
- Output looks really good!
I use LaTeX: why should I use LyX?
- Mathed
- Full LaTeX functionality
- builtin (gui) bibtex &c.
- WYSIWYM means you need to look at xdvi less often

Added to the tutorial (under "Miscellaneous"). The mathed thing is in "LyX
for LaTeX users" already.
