The problem was that the bibliography/citation behavoir was completely
redefined by a large block of red text between the first and second article.
Of course this would never happen in real life as one uses LaTeX to get a
HOMOGENEOUS layout throughout the publication for all articles, but was done
in the example to show two alternatives.
reLyX translated this red block inaccurately, but even after manually putting
it right, LaTeX barfed at it. So I just commented it out.
I don't think this problem will ever occur in normal use.
I should also note that I have not tested using BibTeX with this class.
Makeindex seems to work fine, tho.
