excess space when using fig.

The sequence 

   as in Figure *Ref:books*,*figure labeled books*, and that both

yields roughly a double length space after the comma:

    blah blah Firgure 3.2,  and that both
                          ^^ double width

The remainder of the spacing on hte line is correct.  Does a space get 
inserted before the fig inset somehow???
