Directly on the machine.  It's most obvious when midway through a line 
in a long paragraph--the full redraw of the rest of the line (to the 
right) occurs [and the rest of the paragraph?] before the next 
backspace is processed.  The result is that there are several 
backspaces waiting in the buffer which will make the redraw obsolete, 
yet each redraw is done.  I notice it more in very long documents, but 
this may be a selection bias--things tend to be long before I edit them.

On the 200, it's never more than mildly annoying. On the 486, it tends 
to result in overdeletion.
