Only that we have to point the user by default to some particular
package, if only for readability.

This is not a package anymore, but a distribution (in the linux
sense). What would make sense to me is to have a lyx installer that
only installs lyx, and a meta installer that bundles all necessary
packages to make lyx work.

But the lyx part of the installers should be rigorously the same.
