On the technical side, pixmap cache is more appropriate (read the qt docs for 
details). For the user guide, just write something like:

"With this option enabled, LyX needs to redraw the screen less often. This 
results in better performance, especially on slow systems. On the other hand, 
however, the characters might look more fuzzy on screen. So whether you 
enable this or not depends on whether you prefer speed over aesthetics. Note 
that the Pixmap Cache is only available for the Mac and Windows."

IMHO a user doesn't need to know how this is achieved technically.
