I see you did it now. An alternative (like emacs does) is to replace
them by a message in the status area.
We can replace the checkbox with three radio buttons. Problem is that
tooltips might have multiple lines. We could probably implement tooltips
in two versions, one short that could be reused for statusbar messages
and a longer one that would appear if you click in the tooltip.
